Rotier’s (Nashville)

Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama

When we travel, I always look for restaurants that really cater to the local flavor, have a loyal following, and something unique that's a must try and Nashville was no exception.  The place everyone seemed to rave about was  Rotier’s Restaurant—a hole in the wall and a Nashville institution know for their delicious burgers served on french bread.  Apparently this place gets super crowded but since we arrived at an odd time our large party of 7 was able to sit right down.  The crew ordered the burgers and the fries, and to be totally honest, after giving it all a taste, I am not sure what all the fuss was about.  This place has been in business since 1945 and I am guessing the menu hasn't changed much since then in this little diner  that it is the epitome of a true “greasy spoon.” We've eaten burgers all over the country, and sadly, Rotier's just didn't do it for us. It was a little soggy and lacking flavor.

The decor is pretty cool and it was fun to see some things that were real throwbacks, like the cigarette vending machine.  My dad smoked when I was a kid and I remember seeing those machines everywhere.  it was such a part of the early 70's culture. My dad would give me the money and let me pull the handle.  My dad would smoke right in front of us kids and I was entranced  watching  the smoke curl out of the end of the cigarette.  It was beautiful to watch and just the epitome of cool.   Just seeing that machine made me realize how far we've come, knowing now how dangerous smoking really is, and how damaging second hand smoke can be especially for children.  Thankfully my dad has since quit and lives a much healthier lifestyle....his only vice now...is chocolate.
