Did you know that Newport Harbor is the home base for the yachts that race in the America's Cup? I thought it would be incredibly cool to sail on one and after doing some research, found America's Cup Charters based in Newport Harbor. They are just simply amazing!!! All their boats have at some time raced in the America's Cup and some have even won. What's great is that you do as much or as little "helping" the crew sail the boat as you want. We sailed on the Nefertiti, a beautiful boat who'd raced but had never won. There were 12 of us on board and 3 crew. Captain Walter, Tony and James were fantastic. As we set sail, the boys and I jumped up to help "tack" and "grind" by working together on this hand powered pedal contraption that moves the sail from one side to the other. It's tough work, but great fun. I just loved working side by side with my kids sharing that moment. As we picked up some speed the sailboat leaned at about a 45 degree angle. It's a little frightening at first, but Captain Walter assured us that no one had ever fallen off. The deck also has some kind of coating that really sticks to your shoes so we all felt safe and secure as time went on. As we picked up speed, it was truly exhilarating to feel the wind in our hair, and the ocean spray on our faces.
We maneuvered through the buoys while Captain Walter pointed out some of the local landmarks as well as some of the more famous sailboats moored nearby. The rest of the folks sailing with us were content just to lounge on the deck. My boys each took a turn at the wheel steering the boat back to the dock. I am sure this 2 hour experience is something none of us will ever forget. I am not going to lie, its pretty pricey, but this was just a once in a lifetime experience that I just could not pass up and neither should you if you get the chance to do it.
