Without offending any natives, let's be honest, Kansas is not somewhere that ranks as a hugely popular travel destination. But for those curious to explore, Kansas offers a multitude of interesting opportunities to find out what makes the heartland of America such a special place. In our minivan, our journey took us to Wichita, Topeka and across the state up to Hollenberg and Lebanon where we stood in the geographical center of the United States. In our minds eye we crossed the wide open spaces of the frontier, up into outer space and into the depths of our own heart. At times the landscape was breathtakingly beautiful alternating between rolling grassy meadows and acres of crops as far as the eye could see, surely what Dorothy must have seen as the tornado whisked her and Toto away to Oz.
We explored our collective conscience and learned to feel what it's like to be an outsider and we learned what it meant to take risks to further progress for the betterment of all mankind. With every trip, you can simply scratch the surface and and enjoy the obvious pleasures. If that is what you are looking for, then Kansas may not be for you, but if you are truly willing to explore, willing to open you mind and be truly moved, then Kansas will take you into the heart of this magnificent heartland and leave you forever changed just as it did each and every one of us.
