On the way to Hilo, Akaka Falls is a wonderful stop that will take about 20 minutes and is totally worth it. It’s a lovely nature trail that goes around in a circle. The first thing we noticed were the incredible and diverse plant life. We noticed giant bamboo that seemed as tall as a three story building making us feel like dwarfs and tiny fiddlehead ferns coiling up on themselves. There were exotic flowers and colorful birds and the boys even spotted some bright green and very shy geckos. As we rounded the last curve on the trail, we came upon the most beautiful waterfall. Starting as a babbling brook on top and spilling in a cavernous pool below, it was just breathtaking. This is just a wonderful, free and unpretentious place to reconnect with nature and realize that plants are some of the most beautiful and wondrous things on earth. It’s a definite DO NOT MISS!
My photos just do not do this justice!
