Oklahoma has a wonderful riverwalk that's also known as Bricktown. It's a wonderful place to grab lunch or dinner, spend a little time shopping, even check out a minor league ballgame at the Bricktown Ballpark. Did you know that baseball great Johnny Bench was from Oklahoma? We had lunch at this fantastic little italian pizza joint. The owner whose name was Chris looked like he was straight out of Brooklyn, heck … [Read more...]
National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum (Oklahoma City)
The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum has some of the most amazing artwork and while some of it is traditional sculptures and paintings, much of is decorative and embellishment of typical cowboy related items like saddles, spurs clothing etc. The museum also highlights the history and culture of the American Cowboy from it's earliest beginnings to today. The sculptures we saw were breathtaking. The one … [Read more...]
Oklahoma City National Memorial (Oklahoma City)
The Oklahoma City National Memorial was a particularly difficult stop. Not only was it heartbreaking and sad to imagine how many innocent people lost their lives, it was even more difficult to explain to the kids how someone expressed his political views by killing innocent men, women, and children. On the morning of April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh parked a rental truck loaded with explosives in front of the Alfred … [Read more...]
Omniplex Science Museum of Oklahoma (Oklahoma City)
The Omniplex Science Museum of Oklahoma is another terrific science museum. The truth is, I probably would not have stopped here since we’d already seen a bunch of these on other trips, but it was AIR CONDITIONED and we needed a break from the blazing hot Oklahoma heat. There are lots of activities and constantly changing exhibits and a really cool Imax theater, so if you aren’t too jaded already, you should … [Read more...]
World of Wings Pigeon Center (Oklahoma City)
At one of our stops I was perusing the brochure rack like I always do looking for activities I might have missed in my research, when I noticed an activity I hadn't heard or read about—and that’s how I discovered one of our most unique and memorable stops! World of Wings is a “museum” (I use that term loosely here) dedicated to “preserving the legacy of Domestic Pigeons.” Before you start scratching … [Read more...]
Pioneer Woman Museum (Ponca City)
The Pioneer Woman Museum is just a gem of a museum, not because it has super glamorous displays or fun interactive exhibits, but because it inspires wonderful conversations about the challenges of being a pioneer and what that meant for women and families. After looking at the vignettes and displays of pioneer life, I imagined what it was like for many of these women. I tried to put myself in that time an … [Read more...]
The National Wrestling Hall of Fame (Stillwater)
The National Wrestling Hall of Fame is where you can find everything you always wanted to know about wrestling, all in one location. Since we were passing through and needed a pit stop to stretch our legs I thought this would be something interesting and educational even if it was just a quick visit. This stop was ok, low key and definitely not on the high tech or glamorous side. We walked around looking at the … [Read more...]
Oklahoma State Capitol Building (Oklahoma City)
The Oklahoma State Capitol Building is one of my most memorable and favorite capitol buildings of the many I have visited . Everywhere you look there are incredible paintings and murals that are so vivid and bright. The artwork depicts the history and spirit of Oklahoma as well as it's connection to oil. Many of the stunning paintings were done by Native American artists. This is also the only state capitol … [Read more...]
Big Splash Water Park (Tulsa)
After a ridiculously hot day exploring (Yeah—check out the temperature reading in the mini van. Did I say it gets hot? That’s 109 folks) it was time to take a break so off we headed to the Big Splash Water Park. There are all kinds of rides and plenty of shade for parents to kick back. Water slides, wave pool—you name it. This place is pretty big and as long as the kids stuck together, I let them run … [Read more...]
Discoverlyland USA (Tulsa)
Discoverlyland USA is home to an outdoor amphitheater on the outskirts of Tulsa where they preform the musical Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! I bought tickets, thinking how cool it would be to sit outside and watch Oklahoma! IN Oklahoma. We grabbed our snack and our seats and waited for the show to start. It show started out ok, but soon enough my crew was yawning and couldn’t follow the story. I must … [Read more...]
