JFK Presidential Library and Museum (Boston)

JFK Presidential Library and Museum

Traveling throughout the USA we've had opportunities to visit many Presidential Libraries.  Some are absolutely incredible and some not so much.  After being blown away by the Abraham Lincoln Library, and the Bill Clinton Library our expectations were very high for the library of JFK whose presidency was filled with dramatic events, who was so beloved and whose family possessed enormous wealth. We entered the … [Read more...]

Massachusetts State Capitol Building (Boston)

Massachusetts State Capitol Building

This is a great place to start in Boston since it is right across the street from Boston Commons, which is where you start the Freedom Trail. Do walk around and get a sense of the place, however, I don't recommend spending too much time here by taking a guided tour. My kids and I cruised around the building and saw what we needed to see in about 15 minutes.  Mainly we came to check out some of the artifacts which … [Read more...]

MIT (Boston)

MIT

MIT is the epicenter of math and science geekdom and you can just feel the genius of the student body radiating in the air. My kids and I walked around in our search for the student store in awe knowing that each and every student we passed was ridiculously brilliant. A hilarious high point was someone asking my 17 yr. old daughter for directions on campus. She was flabbergasted that someone actually thought she was … [Read more...]

For a super fabulous lunch or dinner, head to a lovely enclave with tons of authentic Italian restaurants, coffee houses, and gelaterias. Cape Cod

Cape Cod

The storied vacation spot on the eastern seaboard. Wow, what are they giving away here for free? I cannot even begin to tell you how much traffic there was to get here. While the area is very charming and picturesque, maybe I missed something. Unless you have a house here, and come here for a significant amount of time, I am not sure I get it. Lots of cute shops and beaches, but definitely not worth the traffic, … [Read more...]

Fisherman’s Memorial (Gloucester)

Fisherman

If you haven't seen the movie "A Perfect Storm" with George Clooney, you should see it before you visit so that you understand the reverence with which this town holds its fisherman.  The memorial is a little tough to find as there's no physical address, but head to the shore and follow the flags and you should find it-or just ask someone who lives there.  It's a hugely moving memorial honoring all the fisherman … [Read more...]

Minute Man National Historical Park (Lexington and Concord)

Minute Man National Historical Park

The Minute Man National Historical Park is an area between the towns of Lexington and Concord and  encompasses several sites important to the planning and preliminary battles of the American Revolutionary War.  I cannot even begin to tell you what a profoundly moving experience it was to stand of the very ground that was once soaked with the blood of those who bravely fought for our right to be free and self … [Read more...]

American Textile Museum (Lowell)

American Textile Museum

What a waste of time! Not only of ours, but of the folks who put this jumble of a museum together.  It's such a shame because there are some really cool artifacts but there are no explanations about what you are looking at.  There was a whole display about linen and yet, there was nothing to tell you  that linen comes from the flax plant or what's involved in making it  all they had were a few swatches of woven … [Read more...]

Boott Cotton Mills-Lowell National Historical Park (Lowell)

Boott Cotton Mills-Lowell National Historical Park

Visiting Boott Cotton Mill is an important lesson in the industrial revolution of this country.  Rising like a cathedral, this huge building complex reminded me of fortress.  Built in the 1830's and opened for 100 years, this factory used the raw cotton shipped from plantations in the south and turned into cotton fabric.  Head upstairs to the mill room, and you experience what it was like for that factory workers … [Read more...]

Plimoth Plantation (Plymouth)

Learn about the Wampanoag tribe of Native Americans who lived side by side with the Pilgrims by visit ing a Wampanoag village with real descendants of the tribe who work here to … [Read more...]
