As you drive through and explore Vermont, you realize why this is the perfect location for the Ben and Jerry's factory. Rural dairy farms and a hippie vibe swirled together just like their ice cream. My kids just could not wait to get here. Unfortunately the way it worked out on our trip, we needed to hit this stop in the morning and lucky for us, it opened at 9am. Ice cream for breakfast-not such a bad … [Read more...]
Blackbeards (Corpus Christie)
After the long drive down from Houston we were starving. Heading down toward the beach near our hotel we found Blackbeards, a seafood restaurant that was mighty tasty . Argh matey’s…the Fish and chips were pretty darn good according to Joel, our resident Fish and Chips expert! At dinner we laughed at the fact that we almost drove all the way down to Padre Island at the very bottom of Texas. I had punched in … [Read more...]
Texas State Aquarium (Corpus Christie)
Before hitting the road out of Corpus Christie we decided to check out the Texas State Aquarium. While it's kind of on the small side compared to some other aquariums we've seen we all had a great time experiencing the touch tanks learning about some of the local marine life. One particularly interesting exhibit that we hadn't seen before was a stingray touch tank. The kids all stuck their hands in-me I wasn't so … [Read more...]
USS Lexington Museum On The Bay (Corpus Christie)
If you’re like us and have never been on an aircraft carrier, then you’ll find The USS Lexington Museum On The Bay really interesting just like we did. This ship was enormous, in fact the kids and I felt like it was a floating city. This ship was used in World War II and we got to see what life was like for the sailors on board, where they ate and slept, how they manned the battle stations and where they got … [Read more...]
Adventure Landing (Dallas)
After an intensely serious activity learning all about the Kennedy assassination, the kids and I needed some fun and a bit of a break from the Texas heat. We headed to Adventure Landing, another family fun center in one of the Dallas suburbs. The kids hopped in the bumper boats as soon as I paid the price of admission and set off soaking each other in no short order. Next we headed to the air conditioned … [Read more...]
The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza (Dallas)
While Dallas is known as a gleaming glamorous city home to some of the country's wealthiest oil barons, sadly, it is also known for is the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The kids and I made our way to The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza where literally in the road two x's mark the spot where the two shots ended the life of our 35th president. It’s hard to imagine what happened that day, but after … [Read more...]
Billy Bob’s Texas (Fort Worth)
Billy Bob's Texas bills itself as the World's Largest Honky Tonk and I was just dying to check it out (cowboy boots and all), but I was pretty sure they wouldn't allow kids. Here's another great example of it never hurts to ask. I called up before heading over and was told the whole family was welcome and that there were tons of family friendly activities. Well they weren't lying, this place is an absolute … [Read more...]
Cowtown Cattlepen Maze (Fort Worth)
Give the Cowtown Cattlepen Maze a try if you or your kids are feeling adventurous. We checked in and paid our fee and each kid was given a timed ticket. Their mission was to collect the 4 unique stamps within the maze and then return before the time is up. Gettting their tickets, my kids took off like rockets in all different directions. I stood on the viewing platform watching them run around like little mice. … [Read more...]
Federal Bureau of Engraving (Fort Worth)
The Federal Bureau of Engraving is one of the few places where we have ever experienced such tight security. It was so tight in fact that we couldn't even bring in our phones or camera, we had to leave everything in the car. You can't even walk up to the building, you have to park and take a special shuttle bus that takes you to the front entrance. It's no surprise then that I don't have any photos of the … [Read more...]
Fort Worth Stockyards (Fort Worth)
I don't know about you, but cattle don't parade down the streets of my city, but apparently they do at The Stockyards in Fort Worth. Holy cow! at 11:30am and 4pm they have a mini cattle drive and the Texas Longhorns march right through the streets with cowboys keeping the herd in check. My kids and I stood at the curb and watched them saunter by with their long horns, I must admit it was all pretty impressive. … [Read more...]
