For lunch or dinner try…The Pig on Beale- So if you’re a meat eater, you just have to sample the famous Memphis BBQ. Memphis BBQ is unique since it's more vinegary and spicy BBQ as opposed to Carolina BBQ which is sweeter or Texas and Kansas City which is more smoky tomatoey. So there you have it, American BBQ 101. As we were walking down Beale Street (which is the heart and soul of the Memphis music scene) … [Read more...]

Dollywood (Pigeon Forge)
I’d promised my kids a trip to Dollywood Splash Country after they’d seen some show about it on TV about the top 10 water parks in the country and it's all they could talk about they were so excited. Sadly, it did not live up to everyone’s expectations which is what usually happens with these large over hyped activities. As we do at every water park, we staked out our chairs and the kids were off and running. … [Read more...]
Great Smoky Mountain Lumberjack Feud Dinner Show (Pigeon Forge)
Pigeon Forge, in addition to lots of family fun amusements, also has a crazy array of wonderful and weird dinner shows. You just cannot visit here without seeing at least one of them. We thought about the Hatfields and McCoys’ dinner show, which I am sure was just a hoot but instead opted for the Great Smoky Mountain Lumberjack Feud Dinner Show. It was a rainy evening so it was perfect since it was all … [Read more...]
Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe (Key West)
The first thing that catches your eye about Kermit's Key West Key Lime Shoppe is the bright yellow and lime green colors of the little shop beckoning you to come inside and try Key West's most famous tart and tangy treat. Inside we found all kinds of delicious sounding key lime products like key lime mustard dipping sauce, key lime cooler cookies ( I used to LOVE lemon cooler cookies when I was a kid), spicy key lime … [Read more...]
BD’s Mongolian Grill (Milwaukee)
As we approached Milwaukee, the kids were starving and we happened upon an amazing Mongolian BBQ place called BD’s Mongolian Grill. It’s a buffet of raw veggies, meats, noodles, and rice with various sauces. You assemble your bowl and then hand it to the cook who stir fries it up on a big flat wok. This place was not only beyond delicious, but it was also fun to do. The kids loved the idea of putting everything … [Read more...]
Texas
As another spring break approached I knew my kids did not want to sit home bored, so I thought what the heck—let’s take another short road trip. Since we knew Texas was too big to combine with another state, and the thought of Texas in the summer sun didn’t sound too appealing, I figured why not—let’s explore the Lone Star state. Although we did miss some of north Texas near Amarillo, I think we got to … [Read more...]
H3 Ranch (Fort Worth)
Fort Worth is an amazing town and since we were staying near the stockyards we thought we'd sample some of the local fare. We stumbled upon the H3 Ranch and all I can say is WOW that was one of the best road trip meals we have ever had. The smell drew us in just like in those old time cartoons. We settled into our big leather seats with a great view of the wood fire grill. They have amazing BBQ steaks and … [Read more...]

Itinerary #13: Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina
The South is wonderfully lush and beautiful. From the green Kudzu plant that covers everything, to the smoky BBQ, to the twangy accents peppered with “y’all,” you know you’re in a culturally rich, interesting, and unique place. We were very excited to explore, but really had no idea what to expect. When I think of Georgia and the Carolinas, I think of lemonade on the porch, biscuits and grits, and weeping … [Read more...]
