Itinerary #14: New England Road Trip

Cape Cod

I knew New England would be rich with historical significance, but I had no idea it would be so overwhelming.  I felt at times that I was standing in the birthplace of this great nation.  Seeing these historic places, pulled at us and brought us close to those brave souls who were pushed to the edge, to risk life and limb for liberty and freedom.  From John Adams to JFK to Ben and Jerry, New England was full of … [Read more...]

Trip #17: Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia

So much of this trip was a sobering reality check that left us understanding the bitter divide between North and South and the everyday souls who endured so much for their cause. Often times words could not describe our feelings looking at the battlefields and learning the personal stories of brave Americans, from decorated generals to those barely old enough to enlist. But not everything on this trip revolved around … [Read more...]

Trip #16: New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania

Sometimes there is so much to see that it is impossible to squeeze it all in and such was the case on our trip to explore these three hugely important states. My kids and I could have easily spent an entire week in New York City alone so it was more than a little frustrating to have to pick and choose what would have the most significance on our trip. I think this itinerary worked well for the most part except when … [Read more...]

Cruising Alaska or Hawaii: Is It Right For You?

As we sat on the dock in Juneau, Alaska a couple of weeks ago we couldn't help but notice the gargantuan cruise ships docked in the port.  As they easily floated in and out of the harbor it was hard not to think about whether we'd made the right decision not to do a cruise, which is the way most folks choose to tour Alaska. My family has had some experience with cruises in the past (a Disney cruise in the Caribean) … [Read more...]

Mt. Roberts Tramway (Juneau)

There is something about those little cars hanging precariously from a single solitary cable that always makes my heart beat a little faster.  Looking up at the Mt. Roberts Tramway I asked my kids if they were game.  When the answer was a resounding yes, I gathered my courage, bought our tickets walked up to the loading area.  I knew that the views would be totally worth it, in addition to all the cool cultural … [Read more...]

Sanibel Thriller Dolphin Tour (Sanibel Island)

Florida

Besides and abundance of shells, Sanibel Island is also a great place to see bottlenose dolphin in their natural habitat.  We found out that the best way to see them is on a boat, which was not only fun for us, but apparently fun for the dolphins as well. We booked a trip on the Sanibel Thriller, a high powered speedboat that cruises around looking for pods of dolphin and then cruises by encouraging the dolphin to … [Read more...]

Itinerary #12: Hawaii

Oahu

Our 50th state, Hawaii is comprised of a group of islands all different and uniquely beautiful. On this amazing trip we had the opportunity to visit Kauai, Maui, the Big Island of Hawaii and Oahu. We learned about natural wonders like black sand beaches, volcanoes and the abundant sea life that inhabit the water surrounding the islands. We learned about Hawaiian history and culture, how the Polynesian peoples … [Read more...]
